Project Luna
Luna is the unofficial mascot of the Central Coast Mobile Fab Lab. Her origins lie in our Living Text Project where we center STEAM skills in childrens' literature in service of deepening literacy and numeracy skills while engaging in theater arts. Her origins as a jaguar in The Great Kapok Tree evolved in support of the Hospice Foundation of the Monterey Peninsula into the alebrije that she is today.
In our shop, she is a development platform where we are always looking at new ways to increase her capacity. At her core she is crafted using traditional papier mache techniques over a styrofoam body. Her function is controlled currently by a Raspberry Pi running Python code. She runs micro servos to control her eye function and 35kg servos to run her neck joint and tail.
Upcoming, we intend to perfect her wings to add to her for regular use as well as adding a few entirely new function: Object recognition and tracking, digitally generated voice and hopefully, AI integration for autonomous vocal production after listening to human input.
